WHO says monkeypox poses ‘moderate risk’ to global public health

by

According to a report by the Russian Satellite News Agency on the 30th, the World Health Organization recently released news that between May 13 and 26, a total of 257 confirmed cases and 120 suspected cases of monkeypox were reported in 23 countries where there was no monkeypox epidemic. Monkeypox poses a “moderate risk” to global public health.

“The public health risk could become high if the virus spreads to groups at higher risk of severe illness, such as young children or the immunosuppressed,” Reuters reported, citing the WHO.

No deaths from monkeypox have been reported so far, the WHO said. The sudden appearance of monkeypox in several non-endemic countries suggests that it has been spreading covertly for some time and that some recent events have exacerbated the outbreak.
